Post subject: Search Engine Optimization Post
Definition: Search Engine Optimization, also known as SEO, is the art and science of making web pages attractive to the search engines.
The better optimized the page is, the higher a ranking it will achieve in search engine result listings. This is especially critical because most people who use search engines only look at the first page or two of the search results, so for a page to get high traffic from a search engine, it has to be listed in those first two pages.

So search engine optimization focuses on techniques such as making sure that each web page has appropriate title tags and meta tags, and that the keyword or key phrases for the page are distributed throughout the content in a way that the particular search engine will like.

Search engines find and catalog web pages through spidering software. Unfortunately, not all search engine spidering software works the same way, so what gives a page a high ranking on one search engine may not give it a high ranking on another.

One of the things that search engine optimization specialists do is keep track of all the changes in search engine operations so they can optimize pages accordingly. They also keep up with changes in the different search engine submission policies.

When you choose a designer to create a business web site, you should ask him or her about search engine optimization, as search engine optimization should be built into your pages. While it's never too late to optimize or tweak pages that have already been published, it's a lot easier and more sensible to include search engine optimization when the page is first written.

Also Known As: SEO.

Examples: Sales on Karen's e-commerce site rose 210% once she had the site redone with search engine optimization in mind.

Alternate Spellings: None.

Common Misspellings: Saerch engine optimization, search engine optamization.

Post subject: Effective Search Engine Optimization... Post
Search engine optimization is crucial for anyone who wants people to visit his or her Web site. You can place as many ads as you like, but most people are still going to find your site because of its listings in search engines or directories.

Search engine optimization is the process of making web pages attractive to search engines. In my work, I visit hundreds of web sites every month. Sadly, many of them are throwing traffic away; they look fine to the viewer, but ignore the basics of effective search engine optimization.

It's a fact that most people who use search engines only look at the first one or two page of search listings. The goal of effective search engine optimization is to get your pages listed on those critical first pages for particular key terms.

How do you do this?

1) Remember that each page of your site is a separate entity. You need to apply the basics of effective search engine optimization to each individual page. Therefore;

2) Choose appropriate key words or phrases for each page. For instance, although this page is part of the Small Business: Canada site, that's not one of the key phrases I've chosen for search engine optimization. (If you've read this far, I bet you already know what the main key word phrase of this page is!)

Phrasing matters. Many more people search for the term "effective search engine optimization" than for "effectively optimizing for search engines". To find out which key words or phrases are more popular than others, you can use a tool such as Overture's Search Term Suggestion Tool; enter your chosen phrases and you'll see how many people searched for that term recently.

3) Give each page an appropriate title that includes the key word or phrase at least once. I so often see sites that use the name of their business as the title of all their pages. Is every page of their site about their business? Probably. But chances are really low that people will be searching for their business' name!

4) Put the key words or phrase that you've chosen in the page's title tag, meta keywords, and meta description. Make sure that the meta description is as appealing as possible, because some search engines actually use this description in the search engine results pages that people will be reading.

5) Be sure your chosen key words or phrase is repeated judiciously throughout the content of the page. You don't want to overdo it, or your page may be rejected as spam, but you need to repeat it enough times that the search engine's software will consider the phrase relevant.

Post subject: Keyword Density Explained Post
I get tons of questions about search engine optimization but this is one of the most popular. First of all - exactly what is keyword weighting - or keyword density as it is also called?

Here's the simple Non-Techy explanation for calculating the keyword density of your pages.

Every page has a total number of words. So, for example, let's say your web page has a word total of 250, not counting all the HTML code ( roughly 1/3 to 1/2 of your web page will be the code - so just deduct that number of words from the total ).

Use a Word processing program to find out your total word count. Paste the HTML source code of the page into a blank document, then choose File> Properties >Statistics >Word Count ( your programs help file will give specific instructions for viewing page statistics ).

Let's move on. If you are optimizing that page for a single keyword, you need to figure out how many times that particular word is repeated within that 250 word total.

Manually scan the page and count every repetition of your keyword. Your Word program should also have an Edit and replace function. Paste in the code and then type in the keywords in both the edit box and the replace box. The program will replace each occurrence of the word with itself...and produce a total count for the number of repeats.

Let's assume for this exercise that you have used that keyword 10 times on your page. To calculate the keyword density - take that figure and divide it by the total number of words on your page. So in this case 10 divided by 250 = .04

Keyword density is always referred to as a percentage of the total word count for the page. So now you need to multiply .04 by 100 to get the percentage figure.

Your calculation would look like this;

.04 x 100 = 4%

The page has a keyword density of 4%.

For effective optimizing that will boost your pages into the Top 20 spots on the major search engines you are aiming for a keyword density of between 2 - 5%.

What you have just been shown is about as simple as it gets for working out the keyword density of a web page. To recap then the formula looks like this;

10 divided by 250 = .04 x 100 = 4% -or-
keyword count divided by total word count x 100 = keyword density in %

To save time, don't stress too much over exactly matching the density of your page to the Top listed pages on the search engines.

Algorithms fluctuate constantly at the major search engines so it is much simpler to optimize a few pages for different weighting or densities. A few pages at 2%, 3%, 4%, and 5% keyword density will mean at least one of your pages should rank well on a major search engine.

Post subject: Test your chosen keyword phrases... Post
Image

The phrases you have used when writing your page may not be the best phrases to use for search engine optimization. You'll probably want to do some rewriting once you figure out what the best keyword phrase for that page actually is.

One way to come up with strong search phrases is to research the phrases that people are actually searching for. A tool such as the Overture Suggestion Tool will show you how many people searched for a particular keyword phrase in the last month.

(Wordtracker is another tool you can use to research keyword phrases; although it's a paid service, a free trial is available. You may also wish to use Digital Point's Keyword Suggestion Tool, which will show you a comparison of Overture and Wordtracker data.)

For instance, the original intended keyword phrase for this page was “optimize a page”. But as you see below, the Overture Suggestion Tool shows me that people aren't even looking for that phrase, and only 121 are searching for the similar phrase “internal optimize page” – which I can't even figure out how to use in a sentence!

When you’re working on search engine optimization and your search results are this dismal, you'll want to rethink and find new phrasing for the page so you have a keyword phrase that people are actually looking for.

Post subject: Find alternative keyword phrases for your page. Post
Image

If you’re working on search engine optimization and your keyword phrase research shows you that there’s not much interest in your chosen keyword phrase, you’ll want to come up with more popular alternatives.

In my experience, nouns are often more popular search choices than verbs, so I would guess that “optimization” would be a more popular search choice than “optimize”.

Below you’ll see my results when I enter “optimization” into the Overture tool – much better results than I got for the keyword phrase “optimize a page”. Even better, this search shows me other potential keyword phrases that I’ll want to consider for my page, such as “web site optimization” with 4752 results and “search engine optimization” with 101,349 results.

Remember, for the best search engine optimization results, I want to have one keyword phrase per page. Which one of these three potential keyword phrases should I choose?

Post subject: Put your keyword phrase in your page metatitle. Post
Image

The metatitle is the title that appears at the top of your browser window when you’re viewing a page online. It’s one of the most important places to put your keyword phrase for search engine optimization because search engines give the metatitle a lot of weight when determining page rankings.

Many people don’t realize that the metatitle is a great opportunity to repeat your keyword phrase once or twice. Your human visitors won’t care as most people don’t even read a browser title once they’ve arrived at a page and your nonhuman search engine spider visitors will love it. (Don’t repeat it more than twice though or they won’t like it at all!)

When you’re performing search engine optimization, get into the habit of repeating your keyword phrase by using a structure to form your metatitle such as:

[keyword phrase] – How to [keyword phrase]

All kinds of variations on this basic structure are possible, as you’ll see in the metatitle of the page I’ve given as an example of search engine optimization below.

You should not use any punctuation in your metatitle, other than the hyphen.

Post subject: Put your keyword phrase in your page’s other metatags. Post
Image

For the best search engine optimization results, you want to be sure that your keyword phrase is in all your page’s other metatags, too.

Putting your keyword phrase in your page’s metadescription is important not only because it’s another part of your page that “tells” search engine spiders what your page is about, but because many search engines use your page’s metadescription to describe your page in their search listings.

So writing the page’s metadescription is a special challenge; for good search optimization, it has to include your keyword phrase several times, but it also has to be written in such a way that it’s enticing to people browsing search engine listings. If you’re finding writing this metatag difficult, aim for clarity – the clearer an idea you give people about whatyour page is about, the more likely they are to visit your page.

The metadescription for the page I’ve used as an example below reads:

Why waste time on Web site promotion methods that will only bring you minuscule returns, if any? If you’re prepared to work on them, these five free Web site promotion techniques will deliver, rewarding you with the increased site traffic you’re looking for.
You will also list your keyword phrase in your metakeywords tag. You might also list other related keywords here that appear in the content of your page. If you do, list no more than six or seven.

Post subject: Seed your keyword phrase throughout your page content. Post
Image

For the best search engine optimization, you want your keyword phrase to be repeated at least twice in your first two paragraphs. Have a look at the first paragraphs in the example of one of my articles below. I bet you don’t have any difficulty in figuring out that the keyword phrase is “Web site promotion”.

You also want it to appear an appropriate number of times throughout the content of your page. How many times is appropriate? As Christine Oakley explains in her article, Keyword Density Explained, you want to aim for a keyword density of between two to five percent to get your pages into one of the top 20 spots on the major search engines.

You want to try to stay within this range, because if you overdo using your keyword phrase, search engines may view you page as spam and give it a low ranking or even not list it at all. (If you’re not familiar with keyword density, Christine’s article explains how to calculate it and use it to improve your search engine rankings.)

Generally, when I'm working on this part of search engine optimization, I use what I call the “acouplea” approach. I make sure that I use my chosen keyword phrase several times at the beginning of the piece, several times in the middle and several times at the end.

If your page includes images, be sure not to waste the opportunity to put your keyword phrase into the alttext and caption fields if at all possible.

Post subject: One last thing you can do to optimize your page. Post
Your search engine optimization work with this page is complete. It won’t happen immediately, but once you’ve put the new version of your page and search engines have had a chance to reindex it, you should see your search engine page rankings rise.

One last thing you can do to improve your page’s search engine optimization is to actively solicit links to your Web page from the Webmasters of similar sites and/or pages. Link popularity is another important component of search engine page rank.

The better quality an incoming link is, the more it will help your page rank. Remember, though, that links to a page will only build popularity for that particular page, not for your site in general.

Post subject: Top 10 Search Engine Optimization Tips Post
Getting a high rank on search engines through user keyword searches can be difficult, but with proper focus on writing your blog posts for search engine optimization (SEO), you can boost your rank for specific keyword searches and your blog's traffic. Follow these tips to get the biggest results.

1. Check the Popularity of Keywords

In order to obtain traffic from keyword searches on the major search engines like Google and Yahoo!, you need to be writing about a topic that people want to read about and are actively looking for information about. One of the easiest ways to get a basic idea of what people are looking for online is to check the popularity of keyword searches on websites like Wordtracker, Google AdWords, Google Trends or the Yahoo! Buzz Index. Each of these sites provides a snapshot of keyword popularity at any given time.

2. Select Specific and Relevant Keywords

A good rule to go by is to select one keyword phrase per page then optimize that page to that keyword phrase. Keywords should be relevant to the overall content of your page. Furthermore, choose specific keywords that are more likely to give you a better search results ranking than a broad term would. For example, consider how many sites use the keyword phrase of "punk music." The competition for ranking using that keyword is likely to be tough. If you choose a more specific keyword like "Green Day concert," the competition is a lot easier.

3. Select a Keyword Phrase of 2 or 3 Words

Statistics show that nearly 60% of keyword searches include 2 or 3 keywords. With that in mind, try to optimize your pages for searches on keyword phrases of 2 or 3 words to drive the biggest results.

4. Use Your Keyword Phrase in Your Title

Once you select the keyword phrase you plan to optimize your page for, make sure you use that phrase in the title of your blog post (or page).

5. Use Your Keyword Phrase in Your Subtitle and Headlines

Breaking blog posts up using subtitles and section headlines not only makes them more visually appealing on a text heavy computer screen, but it also gives you additional opportunities to use your keyword phrase.

6. Use Your Keyword Phrase in the Body of Your Content

It's important that you use your keyword phrase in the body of your blog post. A good goal to try to achieve is to use your keyword phrase at least twice in the first paragraph of your post and as many times as you can (without keyword stuffing - see #10 below) within the first 200 (alternatively, the first 1,000) words of your post.

7. Use Your Keyword Phrase in and Around Your Links

Search engines count links higher than plain text in their search algorithms, so try to create links that use your keyword phrase. Avoid using links that simply say, "click here" or "more information" as these links will do nothing to help you with your search engine optimization. Leverage the power of links in SEO by including your keyword phrase in them whenever possible. The text surrounding links is typically weighted more heavily by search engines than other text on your page as well. If you can't include your keyword phrase in your link text, try to include it around your link text.

8. Use Your Keyword Phrase in Images

Many bloggers see a large amount of traffic sent to their blogs from image searches on search engines. Make the images you use in your blog work for you in terms of SEO. Make sure your image filenames and captions include your keyword phrase.

9. Avoid Block Quotes

There are differing opinions on this issue with one group of people saying that Google and other search engines ignore the text included in the HTML block quote tag when crawling a web page. Therefore, the text within the block quote tag won't be included in terms of SEO. Until a more definitive answer can be determined to this issue, it's a good idea to keep it in mind and use the block quote tag cautiously.

10. Don't Keyword Stuff

Search engines penalize sites that stuff pages full of keywords simply to increase their rankings through keyword searches. Some sites are even banned from inclusion in search engine results because of keyword stuffing. Keyword stuffing is considered a form of spamming, and search engines have zero tolerance for it. Keep this in mind as you optimize your blog posts for search engines using your specific keyword phrase.
